Can I get credit card payment protection refunded?

Hi all, tried asking this is in credit card forum but no-one seemed to know and maybe the Loans people know more about PPI/etc? Or it may just be that the answer is obvious and I am an eejit and should get on with cancelling for future months!

I've only just registered that I have payment protection on my NatWest credit card which is probably valueless as I am a contractor currently... however I've had the card a looong time (maybe 12 years?) and in fact, I had payment protection pay out several hundred pounds once around... 6? years ago when I was made redundant.

I think, however, that I then screwed up and kept paying the PPI, even though I was then unemployed for some time, followed by part-time 'self employed' work, followed by some contracting, etc. (I've only been an "employee" for around 1 year in the last 6, I think).

So, do I have any legs to stand on if I asked for a refund? Certainly I've paid many, many months of the protection when I would've been unable to collect on it and shouldn't have had it, but I am thinking that this may be my own fault ...!
I am not really clear when I first started getting PPI... when I first got the card I was actually a student!

Thanks for any input :)

    Bruno,

Given that you have benefited from the insurance in the past I'm not sure you will get far with this.

There obviously isn't a misselling case and if you didn't let Nat West know that you were now self-employed and therefore ineligible then that is hardly their fault.

Have a look at your policy too - it maybe that it does offer some benefit to self-employed or at least cover you for accident or death benefit.

Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

Thanks - that all sounds pretty plausible; its all down to my laziness really, just had sudden optimistic visions of 6 years of PPI refund appearing ;p doubt I will continue the PPI even if there are some self-employment benefits, but anyway shall just shrug and resolve to pay more attention in future!
