  • France ("La Belle France") is feminine. Germany was "The Fatherland" wasn't it, as was Holland and South Africa, amongst others.

I don't know about South Africa and Holland, but Germany's definitely male. In a cemetary in Lvov, in the Ukraine, I saw a headstone with a name (can't remember it) a date of death in late 1914, and "Fur Kaiser und Vaterland" underneath. Rather similar to the "For King and Country" saying, in English.

Iceland and Ireland are both male, I think. And Wales, too, all that "Land of My Fathers" stuff.

Russia's definitely female, and the Motherland / Mother Country is a big deal there. You here is referred to a fair bit in Russian.

Israel's more complicated, I think. there are lots of words for it, and all have slightly different (but politically crucial) differences.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.
  • I can vouch for SA being 'masculine'. It even has (or had) a paper called 'Die Vaderland'. I assume this came from the Dutch.

It is interesting, I love old folklore and symbolism.

I was taught that Britain as a whole was female (Britannia) and that was something to do with the Romans. The it got broken down further and England was male (John Bull), Scotland was also male and Wales was a female (some dame) but can't remember anymore.

Further afield, France was female and Germany was male. There were more female countries than male.

Seems daft as it means an already strapped country ends up paying MORE to borrow, incurring more debt, and needing to borrow more..?

The same as a dodgy borrower would be pushed out of the door of a high street bank, into the arms of Wonga.
