Would cutting the size of our government surely be the best way to reduce taxes?

If government was smaller taxes could be smaller. We might even be able to abolish income tax or maybe even volunteer our input to the government. Small government capitalism is the answer!

In the "swinging 60's" we managed to run the country with a public sector spending roughly 25% of a much smaller GDP.
Now we are spending more like 50%. This has to be taxed or printed.
Unfortunately in a celebrity culture where one child in 7 at 12 is functionally illiterate (never mind innumerate) the politicians get away with the myth that some people can benefit from "government money" (almost everything profitable in the public sector has been privatised years ago)
This allows the politicians to buy votes and makes "working the system" a rational choice for many.0 -
It is very simple.
Spend less. Every penny spent in the public sector has to come from the private sector - or has to be repaid by the private sector in the future.
Cameron and Clegg claim to have realised this, but the plans for public spending for the next 3 years show the nation spending more than it earns every year. The rate of overdraft increase is slowing, but the debt is nowhere near reducing.
The problem is, where do you cut? I'm sure local authorities are required to do too much by legislation. There's a stupid amount spent on climate control jobs. Health, I hate to say, is a political hot potato - the scope of the NHS is generous to the populus and could be cut back but nobody has the guts to do it. Red tape and bureaucracy throughout the public sector is obscene and sick days are twice as likely at the town hall than in the private sector.
Then there's the EU, spending (I think) £100bn a year most of which cannot be accounted for.0 -
Simple. P45 for all Jobsworths who spend their lives telling people what they can't do. P45 all silly non-jobs like the person doing the "black bin survey" for our local Council here.
25% reducation in public sector wages overnight and at the same time a streamlined service to the public, it's a win win.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -
Whoops! I've accidentally stumbled upon the Daily Mail.
How did that happen?0 -

Nobody capable of realising that a 1 hour meeting with 14 people to discuss a £75 spend is completely stupid!0 -
Forget any ideas about abolishing income tax, it just won't happen. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

It will ! That nice Mr Pitt the Younger said it was a "temporary measure" when he introduced it in 1799.
Politicians always tell the truth - so it will be abolished.............just you wait and see....................0
