Dress cancellation advice

My sister paid 50% deposit for her wedding dress - it was off the peg (a sample) and so the shop did not have to order another one in specially made. Unfortunately the wedding has been cancelled and when i called the shop they said that she would have to pay for the dress in full and take it away and it was up to her what to do with it. The wedding was nearly a year away! We accept that the 50% deposit is lost but to pay another £550 is upsetting at an already upsetting time. There was no give or compassion in the womans voice either!
Any advice? Thanks :(

A deposit is a guarantee or bond you will not back out, by taking a deposit the shop has limited its liabilities to the deposit, if they are threatening to sue for the rest this could be a good thing as you can counter sue for the money you have already paid back as they can only keep what they have actually lost, which for an off the peg item is nothing..

Do you have a written aggreement? If so take a look at that & see what it says.

^^^This. Both of the dress shops we bought from (my dress - sample and bridesmaids on order) got me to sign something to the effect of "I understand that if the wedding is cancelled I still need to pay"

Did your sister not take out wedding insurance? You may find if she has, depending on why the wedding has been called off, that she maybe covered.

Same here - I had to sign an agreement that the dress would be paid for in full even if I no longer required the dress, but the dress was being ordered in for me.

Definitely check your wedding insurance, and also ask the shop if they will attempt to re-sell the dress for your sister.

I am sure that the payment in full only applies to dresses that have been ordered in not samples off the peg..... it would be worth checking! x
