Feh. 16-NSD streak in tatters

I tend to lead a sedentary lifestyle, working from home on the occasional contract. And since I live at my parents' place, just about everything is paid for, and I haven't been outside the house for over 2 weeks.

Unfortunately, tomorrow is not gonna be my 16th NSD in a row; I have to travel to the other end of the city. On the bright side, it's for a "chat" with a recruitment agency. On the downer, I've never gained a job from those rip-off merchants that call themselves recruitment agencies, so I don't hold out much hope for this one.

They like me so far, so wish me luck; I might finally get a job off this one!

Why have you not been outside?? Do you have much free time?

As you have to go out, would this be a good time to get some CV's to employers? On the plus side if you get a job and the employer likes you they may take you on permanently. It's a little worrying that you haven't left the house for 2 weeks though, would it not improve your mental and physical health to take the odd walk out?

Are you not going out because you dont want to spend any money?? Thats how it usually works for me although I usually get to about three days then give up and go out. But remember that going out doesnt mean that you have to spend money go for a walk round the block or round the park even if its just to clear your head.

It's perhaps true that staying in isn't doing wonders for my health, but I tend to apply for jobs/contracts online more than anything, and all my work is conducted that way. I'm in IT, so all I need is a Net connection to work, and (when I have work) I don't take free time at all; 12-14 hour days are pretty common.

justruth: As for getting CVs out there, there are very few places in IT that recruit directly, from what I've found; I've got CVs lodged at all the agencies in the area, so there's not much else I can do for the immediate time being.

Can you do other work in the meantime rather than sitting at home on the computer? What about temp work (non IT)?

Annie: I'm on good terms with a few of the people who hand out the local newspaper (it's not a paper round, since you stand around and people come to you), so that's a theoretical option which I can explore while I'm in the city tomorrow. Problem is that travel into the city would just about spend all the earnings from the paper job, leaving me with 20-odd quid for a week's work. Non-ideal, you may say.

Apart from that, there's little else going right now. Asda rejected me for temp work (twice!) and the warehouse-staffing agency is pretty full right now. "Wait and see" is the policy for me at the moment.

Edit:Grammar hack. I hate repeating myself, and "right now" twice was repeating myself.

    Although!

I used to put in time for AQA, but haven't been able to since my Windows partition died and I went through 4 computers. That's back up and running now though, so.

Do AQA have a policy of re-hiring people, and how do I go about it if there is such a thing? ;)

check with them, you may not have lost your position with aqa, as they are not a regular employer, alternatively there is another called justanswers.com that I just signed up with, although I am as yet unable to vouch for them paying you, the system seems a little odd.

Mm, it seems that justanswer operate a different model; one that's more suited to people with good knowledge in a couple of fields, which is good for me.

That said, I just tried to sign up, and their mailservers obviously don't know what their own address is, since my mail account rejected them out of hand. Time to "contact customer services", I guess.
