Car Tax, can I challenge my rate ?

Options
Hi, I have just had my car tax reminder, for my 1.9 gt tdi , 1999 model.
Before I bought the car i checked the tax band on parkers website, It said for years 97-04 would be £115 p/a, my bill is for £215 p/a.
I checked the gov website and it does say that car over 1549 registered before 2001 are rated at £215 P/a.
But doesnt seem to distinguish betwee petrol and diesels.
seems a lot to pay for a diesel, my logbook doesnt state the co2 emissions .
Any advice please, I probably just didnt research it well enough before purchase.

    That's the answer.

All cars registered before 1st March 2001 pay the same rate of either £130 or £215 depending on engine capacity irrespective of whether they are petrol or diesel. They're not taxed on emissions because there is no reliable data, as in the "logbook doesnt state the co2 emissions".

Thanks for that , as I expected.
I wasn't sure if I could have my own emissions test carried out and sent it to them ?

Though I doubt they would be in any hurry to drop my tax rate !

They don't mess about working out the tax for each individual car like that.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
