I thought I would share with you my experiences of dealing with the tax people after recently leaving the UK. It might help others in a similar position.
I left the UK in early June, although to all intents and purposes I was employed by my UK employer until 30 June, given that I too the last three weeks as paid leave.
I have since relocated to the (tax paradise) of Hong Kong, but that's another story altogether.
Leaving and getting a rebate on my UK tax was a breeze. I simply called the tax people before I left and informed them that I would be leaving the country on the date. I then waiting for my P45 from my employer (although in this case it was slightly delayed because I was due a bonus payment a month after leaving), before downloading and completing a P85 form. This was sent to the tax office together with sections 2 and 3 of the P45.
A couple of weeks later, I get a notifcation that I'm due a rebate of nearly 7500 which is being paid directly to my UK bank account.
Thanks George. I love your work.
Life is good.

This is fine, but you still need to file a self-assessment tax return for the year of departure and - most importantly of all - actually break UK residence!0

I am glad you experienced no problems, but... this is how it's meant to work! HMRC do actually get things right most of the time (i.e. more than 50%). Nothing to do with George though, this has been the procedure for many years.0 -

Not true on the first (assuming bendix wasn't filing self assessment beforehand), but it is true on the second. Although from bendix's other posts recently about the UK it looks to be pretty permanent
I somehow doubt this fairly straightforward process has anything to do with George Osborne mind....0 -

I left UK in July and therefore paid tax from April to June 2011. I am hoping I will be able to claim some tax back? I now live in Guernsey where i plan to be for at least 5 years. will i qualify for a rebate?0
