second job on wrong tax code need help.

hi guys could really do with some help.

recently noticed on my 2nd job pay slip that i wasnt paying any tax or contribution when i checked the tax code was 547L before april it was br my first job is on the 747L rate. the accountant for my second job said he'd been sent a form from the tax office saying i only had one job(he didnt bother passing this info on to me or my employer) but i have had two jobs for years and was paying tax on both jobs. is this my fault for not noticing or the tax office ballsing it up. and does anybody know will i be liable for the missed tax? thanks tom

    Unfortunately you will be liable. However, this will be via a code revision and so spread over the course of a tax year. This may occur this year or next.

    Your 2nd employer's accountant may well have received a notice from HMRC, a "PAYE Coding Notice". In which case s/he is obliged to operate that code.

    This isn't unheard of, HMRC's computer has known to go haywire at times. Your best course of action is to notify HMRC of the error.

    Coincidentally, if your first job pays less than £7475 pa, or previously, less than £6475 and you've been taxed BR on the second job, you may be due a refund. This may explain why the computer has generated this coding notice.

    To give you an idea, at the top end you're looking at £456.25 to repay (including this months payrun if code still active).
