Applying for a job after temp employment.

My partner is Temping for a large high street chain in their H/O. We are struggling on his £6.50ph supporting 2 children but he had to get whatever work he could when his was made redundant.
He is working as a customer service rep sorting out internet orders, but before this he worked in Sales and also trained new reps. He is actually happier there than any of the previous jobs he has had.
Anyway in this temp position, all of the temps have been told that their Team leader is going on maternity leave and they want to recruit for it.
They want a cv and a covering letter detailing why they should employ him.
He needs this job so badly, we are hardly surviving currently AND trying to get out of debt.
So....Can I have a few suggestions on how to word the letter? What to say to attract their attention?
He has a fab CV already but its the letter that will clinch the deal as they already have a copy of his CV when they took him on.
I feel excited but nervous cos its raised our hopes so much now.
Thanks guys xxx

For starters, let him draw attention to the fact that he's really enjoyed working there on his temp contract, that he believes he's been doing an excellent job, relating well to his colleagues, and is keen to continue doing so.
Then let him highlight the experience on his CV which is particularly relevant to this role, eg if training staff is part of this job, re-stating his X year's experience training sales reps. If it's true, worth saying that he enjoyed training and supervising staff, and is keen to build on this previous experience.
Keep it to one side. If it says 'hand-written' then hand-write it, practice it and make it perfect! if it doesn't say hand-written, I'd type it but then my handwriting is pants!
