Received an odd letter from 1st Credit

Hi,

I have today received a letter from 1st Credit.
It is addressed to me, and came to my current address. It says:

1st Credit is attempting to contact the above named person regarding a personal matter. Your address has been supplied as a possible address for our subject.
If you are (me) then contact our offices immediately on 0843 blah blah and quote the above reference number at which time further information can be provided.
if you are not (me) or have information that may assist please call 0843 blah blah so we may correct our records.
If no response is received within 10 days of issue we will assume you are the individual and will ensure all further correspondence is sent to you.

Now I am obviously bothered by this.
Basically I had a few debts and then moved overseas in 2004. I returned a few years ago and have been living peacefully, I have a good credit record at the moment and have been at this particular address for a year. I dont know if this letter is something to do with those old debts (which must have been written off by now? Over 6 years..) or whether its something else. When I moved in this house there was a few letters from a debt agency for the previous tenant and I rang them and told them they didnt live here anymore, so dont know if they are blaming me for those? I dont want to ring 1st Credit as I have heard various stories about them and also dont want to ring and have them think I am accepting the debt by calling them?

Has anyone had a letter like this, and what happens if I ignore it? I am worried sick. Any advice appreciated.
Please God, help me stop spending!

Sounds like a statute barred debt? Have you checked for CCJs?

Write to them and tell them to get lost if that proves to be the case.

They are legally allowed to ask you to pay until you tell them to get lost.

    Thanks for that.
Im not aware of any CCJs, I left the UK in early 2004 and any debts were left unpaid from then. I have not made any contact since then. When I returned I just applied for credit under my new address (didnt mention those previous addresses as I had been overseas since). So dont know if CCJs were filed after I left. I will wait to see if they send another letter with further details and then will respond with the template provided by fermi. Thanks.

Go to the Registry Trust on-line and you can check for CCJs, or get your credit records from the CRAs.
