Debt to RBS

Options
It's a long story so I won't bore you with details but it seems we owe RBS some money. I know people say it all the time but I genuinely thought it was paid after we sold our house and moved temporarily overseas for 9 months.

It was OH card, I thought he had paid it off and he thought I had paid it off as I usually paid it when I popped into town.

Anyway we got the letter from a DC a few months back and he spoke to them and chased it back (just to make sure) and saw it hadn't been paid so we do owe the money (£2300), no arguement.

Anyway hubby never rang them back and thought he would wait it out til they contacted him again :o he put in to work overtime so he could pay it off and the money has been put a side.

However they haven't been back in touch and checking his credit report yesterday there is an entry from them which says we have gone away????

Thing is we haven't we are still here hubby is still working overtime to pay them off. I have said he should ring them and pay off the money that we have, but he seems to want to ride his luck as he thinks they cant be too bothered about it as we have only received the one letter months ago, had no phone calls and the credit report says gone away.

Does anyone know with reference to debt collection what "gone away" means.

Thanks.

    Hi soccermom,

Are you referring to the GAIN section of the credit report (Gone Away Information Network)? If a creditor reports you on here then it means you have moved away without leaving your contact details. I'm no expert on this, but it looks like it may give you problems getting credit in the future and also that companies you have credit with can share address information here which could be used to track you down.

If you do decide you want to clear the debt but don't have the full amount yet, then one option may be to offer a percentage of the outstanding balance in full and final settlement (I don't know much about how to do this but others can advise or have a search around the forums here for further details). Good luck!

    It says it next to

    Special Instruction Indicator:Gone Away

Not sure how they can say we have gone away we are still here. The account was defaulted on 26/02/2009 and the last update on account was 05/06/11.

We haven't heard from them in about 5 months now.

I had read about the partial settlement thank you I will look into it and see what oH thinks.

I think he is hoping that as it says gone away they may not be back. Fortunately we are in the position where we won't be needing credit for the forseeable. As from now on after what paying off all debts (or thought we had :o) we wont be going down that road again.

    Thanks for your reply

Edit have just seen the gain section and no its not in there its in the account info section under RBS credit card.

its an indicator normaly wescott mess up with these, you could be lucky but dont hold your breath they may just issue court action.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Could they issue the court action without trying to get in touch with us again.

Could you explain what an indicator is please, not very good at all this I wish hubby would just pay and put me out my misery :o I think he is enjoying the thrill of the chase too much.

    Thanks

    no they shouldn't.

    you should get clear warning.

wescot are unlikely to. chanz4 is just scaremongering

it would be in his best interest to check whether the debt is still with them and sort it if it is though

I agree 100% I hope he gets bored soon and sorts it sooner rather than later.

Just found it strange they have listed us as gone away when we are still here.

its most likely from when you were abroad and so uncontactable as far as they were concerned.

the marker stays. just doesn't mean much now.

he shouldn't take it to mean that they have forgotten.

one reason for it going quiet could be that the debt is being passed on to a different collector. so as i said it might be a good idea to check with rbs exactly who to contact now

We arrived back from overseas in august 2009 we have had contact with them this year do you mean it may not have been updated and that maybe this entry was added back in 2009 and not been updated since, despite the contact this year.

    Did that make sense.

    Thanks
