Overpaid Cabot Financial

Back in the early 2000s, I was a little bit silly with money, struggling with mental health issues including head in the sand syndrome etc etc
Anyway, a store card company sold their debt to Cabot Financial, and I agreed to pay off a balance of £261.20 at a rate of £5 per month with payments starting on 31 July 2006.
Fortunately, my mental and financial health have both improved since the darkest days, and to be honest, I have given little thought to this, apart from occasionally wondering when this would be paid off.
However, going through some old papers at the weekend, I found the original agreement letter, and some quick calculations pointed out that I should have made the last payment several months ago and that Cabot have been merrily collecting money that they shouldn't have been doing, and haven't confirmed that the debt has been paid off!
Obviously, I will be writing to my bank to cancel the direct debit, and I will be writing to Cabot too.
My questions are:
1. Should I be reclaiming the overpaid money through my bank and the Direct Debit Guarantee, or should I be writing to Cabot for it?
2. What phrases should I be looking for from Cabot to confirm that this matter is now closed?
Thanks for your help!
