Where Do You Buy Your Lentils?

I know that people say lentils and pulses are cheap fillers but they aren't really that cheap!

In the supermarkets they're about 88p for 500g. Is this where most people get them or have you found them cheaper elsewhere?

There are a lot of recipes on this board I'd like to try but not if they're going to cost more than meals I see as being less frugal!

Thanks
Charlotte

No proper Asian shops around me so I check out the Asian area in Tescos - Morrisons has one also. Same stuff as in next aisle (lentils, cinammon etc) but 10-50% cheaper.

I'd call that cheap. One bag of pulses cooked is equivalent to 5 tins. When I make lentil bolognese from red lentils I use about 200g for 5 people, so that's about 35p plus a tin of tomatoes.
  • Red lentils are currently half price in Tesco- £1.99 for 2kg which I think is really cheap. I do find that even a 500g bag goes a long way though so even at 'normal' supermarket prices I think they are a frugal ingredient.

Me too:D. I made a shepherdless pie, a pasta bake and a stuffing for peppers from half a pack of green lentils today (44p), so that's 3 meals for 3 plus there will be leftovers for lunches for OH for work. I just added 2 cans of toms (64p), an onion (33p), 4 carrots (20p) and 2 courgettes (46p), a stock cube (10p), fresh thyme from the garden and leftover red wine and cooked it down. Then add on the cost of a pack of A*ldi peppers at 69p, mash potato for the pie (40p) and half a pack of pasta (20p) plus a light grating of cheese (50p) for the bake and it's pretty frugal especially comparing it to using the equivalent weight in good quality meat.

So about £1.35 a meal for 3 people plus lunches.

    I love lentils:D

  • lentil curry is soo cheap! and really tasty. it costs approx £1.25 by my calculations i buy onions from aldi at 69p use 1-2 of those so approx 24p 2/3 green chillies about 9p half a clove of garlic 15p plus olive oil, i got a 5 litre tin for about £13 which will last approx 3 months so that would be approx 36p per curry and spice mix this was £3 and will last for ages but say abut 20p per use and salt i'd say a 500g would make curry 5 times so thats approx 18p a few pence for the salt! we would eat that 3 plus baby for two meals and maybe one lunch
