Doesnt have to be a M - F (if you were refering to 1)evening job but a saturday job or a friday and saturday job, would 8/12 hours take you over the threshold

Most Likely I guess. However i may just have to grin and bear it
it would be 39 hours a week in the garage and
maybe 7-14 hours in a second simple job.
i just really don't want to ruin my apprentiship if im too run down/tired for week day work.
but maybe doing a job on the weekend like you say might not be so bad

Could you move to within cycling distance of work?

Do you think work are particularly pleased with you? How do you think they would react if you asked about chances of a pay rise now you have passed your first year exams. You could point out otherwise you will need to get a 2nd job and might be more tired.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Another thought- do you need a regular £x more a week, or would you be happy with an irregular £y over the year at random times? Your job means you are probably pretty handy, do you have ideas for things you could customise/repair/make and sell, perhaps on ebay? Back decades ago it used to be standard for technicians to use work equipment on their own projects after work or on days off. Many employers have put a stop to this now so you would probably need to see what you can do at home.

i wouldnt have thought you would be too tired if you had just a saturday job or a friday night and saturday job. Maybe go for a saturday job to start off with and see how you go.

What type or car, and insurance do you have?

Could you downsize your car to one with a smaller engine, or add a parent or relative with driving experience onto your policy as an additonal driver to bring it down a little?

TBH I don't think a Saturday job would be the best option. I can't imagine there would be many around, as most would have been snapped up by chldren on school holidays. The ones that are around would be aimed at people still in school who may be able to work the odd day in the school holidays etc., and with very low wage.

good suggestion, except it would inccur alot more expenses. Your technically a courier (i think). If you wouldnt have to get couriering insurance you'd definately have to inform yyour insurance company that itds now SDPC and working in your vehicle which would substantially increase your premiums.

I say this, i didnt look into it too intensely when i thought about it....give it a try mate, especially phoning your insurance company to check how much more it will be if you were to change ur status on ur vehicle. You'd also have to think about more petrol and wear and tear on your car (being mechanically mind or having connections like you might, could minimise this).

my suggestion would be (if your comfortable with your employer) is to get a letter together outlining your personal problems etc and ask for a moment alone with your boss. Explain the situation and that you would like to be considered for a pay rise. If you flat out need a pay rise to live then this could be hard to get.....if you need it for X amount of time until your set pay rise date or w.e then this would be easier to get.
But remember, you dont get anything in this world without asking. You need to approach it in the sincerest way possible, as far as some employers are concerned you get what your given and if you dont like it, you know where to go. I just hope yours is a bit more understanding.

Do they know you live on your own @ your age? im 20 and still @ home, on alot more than yourself and you sound so much more mature it actually makes me feel a little embarrassed lol. Chin up mate, i may earn more but you sound like you absolutely love your job, me on the other hand hate mine......

    Ask, you never know.

oh and if you do get a delivery job can you pm me any details you get because im still interested in it.

    Thanks for all the answers
I do really love my job as yes i do have good connections
mechanical things on cars etc is no problem for me as i have mates.
I also try to do the odd job now and again privately and the employer is fairly reasonable on that after hours.

The Delivery way i might look into very interesting didn't think of that. will let you know how i get on i know there's a local dominoes near me to.

Thanks for the advice russxiii has motivated me a lot :P
