just came across this website, and it shows the history of laundry.
http://www.oldandinteresting.com/history-of-laundry.aspx
there is also some interesting links on the left...
how i stumbled across this website, is that i am trying to find a pair of the old fashioned wooden laundry tongs... for when i am soaking/washing and starching old vintage linen etc... as some times the washing machine just ruins some of the linen
going to make myself a cuppa, and have a good read, while everyone is still having their sunday morning lay in:rotfl:

I do a lot of home dyeing and I use a sturdy pair of BBQ tongs with grippy plastic ends to take things out the dye pots. Might be an option for you, unless you're washing big heavy things?Val.0
