city pub for party

Looking for a pub in the city mile (london) or in Islington/hackney with real ale that I can hire for a weekend (Saturday) birthday party?

This is only slightly out of the area you want, but I believe the Knights Templar (Chancery Lane Wetherspoons by any other name) is closed to the public at weekends and can be hired for functions. This certainly used to be the case. Don't know whether you're one to turn your nose up at Wetherspoons but needless to say they offer a good selection of well priced guest ales as well as all sorts of other things.
