Microwave Rice

Cheapest place for this? I can get 2 packets of Basmati Microwave rice for £1.50

I do alot of slow cooking (sweet and sour chicken, curry's) and it's easy to just whack rice in the microwave for 2 minutes and then serve :p

    Tesco's is about £1, Aldi's too.

Haven't checked Iceland or Morrison's yet, but preferably somewhere that delivers as I'm disabled and I live in a village.

Home bargains usually have this quite cheap.
  • Have you thought about prepping some yourself & freezing it in small bags? I know that there is some concern about bugs on rice, but if you prep it carefully (it's keeping it badly that makes rice dangerous) it should be no more dangerous than freezing and cooking meat.
I've not done it myself, but I would suspect that rinsing it before cooking to get rid of starch, cooking to a state that is a little undercooked and cooling with cold water, then you should be able to microwave from frozen in a covered bowl (where it will steam it a bit more - hence not fully cooking it the first time). Basmati seems to freeze better than long grain.

Measure 1/2 mug of regular rice into a microwavable bowl, cover with double quantity of boiling water. Cover (clingfilm or a plate) cook on 650 for about 11 mins. Remove cover carefully and fluff up.
Perfect rice, net cost a few pennies.

Thanks ever so much for this - I cook with rice quite a lot, so really appreciate the advice on doing it in the microwave - that'll save a bit of electricity!!

As for the OP's question - Sainsbury's own-brand (just standard, not the basic range) of microwave rice is about 95p per bag.

Wouldn't be without rice, paste or couscous - they're so useful. x
  • Home bargains today Basmati microwave rice serves 2 people (not generously) 49p

I bought a microwave rice cooker last year after seeing the reviews on amazon, it is so easy. Similar to gastromix's diy version, but I had a nasty experience with cling film in the microwave before so I'm a big scardey cat. ( really don't get on with cling film I swear it's attacked me several times & tried to strangle me once!!)
    Booo!!!

Crikey, I didn't realise cooking Rice was so hard! Buy the proper stuff, cook it properly and you'll save and it will taste much better!
People are getting lazy - cook things properly, forget the ready made salt/additive laden jars.
