Taking wedding dress on thomson flight

Hi there thinking of getting my wife to be a box off ebay to take her dress on as hand luggage the one i have seen fits to the thomson flight hand luggage sizes, what i have only just noticed though is they are crap with there weight.

I had hoped or planned to take my kilt outfit with me also as hand luggage with a kilt carrier i seen on ebay also, the seller said it folds in half and its ok for hand luggage on flight, but i suppose that depends on who you fly with,i personally think the size once packed and weight would be over the thomson weight etc so looks like i am gonna have to pack this in my case in hold, lets hope the outfit does not get lost.

Anyway back to the wedding dress in box, what does the average wedding dress weigh as i am thinking the box and weight of dress might go over the 5kg that thomson offer,as anyone taken a dress in a box and found that it was too heavy?
This box is not chep more so it only being a box with fancy label etc on it,but would hate to get one and find that the total weight is over the thomson hand luggage allowance.
I cant beleive its only 5kg on thomson i thought it be upto or at least 10kg,some bags weigh almost 5kg without anything in them.

5kg is qiute a standard and generous weight for hand luggage bearing in mind its usually stored in the overhead compartments and therefore would be fairly heavy if it fell on you mid flight...

Wedding dress do indeeed also vary in weight mainly due to the amount of material involved in them...you would need to ask your wife to be what type of dress she may be planning...a beach wedding for example may be that the bridec opts for a lightweight satin or silk dress which packs easily and the weight is minimal...something more elaborate and long with a train is bound to weigh more than a shorter destination dress...

so really its not an average weight for a dress its all about personal choice.

she already has the dress, getting something fitted to it at the shop she got it,it a big dress but not massive but one probably most used say in the uk or better used in the uk and not one maybe used so much overseas,we decided to get wed overseas after she had got it.

The wedding box i have seen on ebay is the best sizes for many airlines including thomsons its 1.2kg in weight, but end of the day its just a box,but i see many have been purchased and seems to be a common thing many use to take there dress with them as hand luggage.

I have been looking at this on the argos site:
    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2863599.htm

What is the better option to take a wedding dress on as hand luggage,Would the dress be more secure etc in the box that pulling the case around by handle,is there more chance of the airline says no you cant take the box on with you versus the case but to be honest i not heard anyone having problems with taking there dress on as hand luggage in a box,the case does have a weight of approx 1.94kg which with thomson i only get 5kg so that leaves less allowance weight if the checked it for the dress to weigh.

Or has anyone taken something else with them instead of the above and how did yoy get on

    Hi,

I'm getting a dress box to take mine on as my hand luggage next year. Not sure how much my dress will weigh yet as it's not been made but I'm having a light destination dress as it will still be red hot in Rhodes in Sept. I can't see any problems with the airline saying that the boxes are a problem to go on as hand luggage as they are a good size & to be honest they don't seem to take much notice of your hand luggage in this country, well they haven't the last few time we have been away. They will however take notice of the weight in Rhodes airport, last year when we checked in we had to put all our luggage on the scales together so 2 suitcases & two hand luggage = a total allowed weight of 50kg anything over was 10E per kg. I beleive that they dress boxes come with special tissue to pack the dress & also instructions on how to pack it.

The weight/size of the dress needs to be considerered. If all else fails, put said gown inside dress bag and fold it into the base of the suitcase. :D

My other half was trying on her dress today and getting some bit and bobs from the shop the lady did not know the weight but said it not be 5kg thats for sure,i have seen that a lot of hand luggage case to weight a bit,we have one at home here and its one of those hard cases and its about 2.85kg and that without anything in it,we still have to put the dress in it,we are flying with thomsons and only get 5kg,the lady in the wedding shop told my other half that she is better to get a case to put it in as hand luggage than a box,but there does seem to be a lot of boxes being sold for this reason.
I am not sure what to go for here and we dont have much time left before we leave less than two weeks

I'm taking my dress in a cabin case and it will be handcuffed to me! I will not let it out of my sight!

If they kick up a fuss, I will turn on the waterworks and sob that is is my wedding dress - it can't possibly go anywhere without me.

Having said that there shouldn't be an issue as my case is light and the dress too. I would be worried if the box was slightly overweight or wrong size and then had to go in the hold.

ETA: I don't think they are dead strict on the 5kg limit, as long as you are not extracting the urine and trying to get 8kg in! You can spread the allowance between your party.
If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.

Depends on who checks you in. Some pople had their hand luggage weighed and had to put things in their hold. Ours was exactly 5kg (got a nifty suitcase scale) but didn't get checked. Why not ring them and ask.

This company sells the cases that fit Thompson flights :http://www.lifememoriesbox.co.uk/luxury-wedding-dress-travel-boxes-8-c.asp
