Anyone worked in commission based job?

Jobs that don't pay, unless you achieve a sale.

I don't particularly like these jobs. I had one, where I didn't get any sales for a few hours and end up earning nothing for the day and wasting travel cost.

I have one of these job on Monday and not sure if I should go.

What's your view on them?

It is always best to go for sales role that have a basic plus commission so that you know that if you make no sales that you still be paid. However if the job is commission only you have to still paid at least the NMW.

The bit I have highlighted above is not true, it depends if the position is self employed or not I believe...............
  • Don't do it!
I worked in self employed field sales one summer, and absolutely hated spending hours traipsing around strange neighbourhoods, knocking on doors and making endless sales pitches, knowing that if I didn't make any sales, I wouldn't be paid anything.
At your interview you might get told that "so and so" made squillions of pounds in a year, but IMHO it really isn't worth it. I'd rather do a day's work for a day's pay. Good luck, whatever you decide. :)

Not all commission only jobs are bad.... some estate agencies, used to at least, offer the option of not receiving a basic salary and but getting a higher rate of commissions and it certainly used to be the route that most the more experienced negotiators would take.

That said, most tend to be the door to door selling type thing and I'm yet to find anyone who made even a basic salary from it. I did once have a commission only job, it was telephone based and I made slightly more than I would have as a standard salaried call centre agent but I've never enjoyed being a sales person so only did it for a few months
