Hi there,
I can't see where else this will fit so please move if there is somewhere more suitable.
I am considering joining my local Total Fitness Gym after hubby and I go for a look round and trial week. If we think it's worth it after we've checked out the facilities then we're gonna go for a 6 mth membership.
I've been reading online that Total Fitness have applied for bankruptcy (not sure if true) and that they may close all of their facilities. My question is, if they do close my local one and we can't go, will we be legally obliged to pay the full 6 months if they stop providing the service. I will read all t&c's before signing anything (including standard cancellation after 6 mths) but wondered if anyone knew where we would stand if they do close. Just don't want to sign up for something if they do close only to end up paying for nothing!
Thanks in advance.

Just go jogging 2 or 3 times a week, stop eating cheese and drinking fizzy drinks. Watch the weight fall off.
That will be £40 thanks.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Another helpful solution provided by the good people of the loans board.
Solid,reliable and above all - free!Space available for rent0 -
Thanks for your replies. We've checked it out and have joined for 6 mths. All in writing and double checked we have to give 30 days written notice to cancel when it gets to that point.
I can't do running due to medical issues so intend on using the pool which will work out cheaper than the local council run pool in the long run.0 -
Pay by Credit CardCan I find out my credit score? You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)0

Meant to say we've set up a monthly DD we don't actually pay up front. So if they decide to close I suppose we could just cancel that if necessary. I can't see that they will close tbh from what I've heard from people who use it. Someone I know knows someone who works there and although it's hearsay there doesn't seem to be anything on the cards re them closing down.
It doesn't cost any extra for 6 mths as opposed to 12 mths so that's why we went for that. We also decided on that gym because we know others who go there and give it the thumbs up.
I just wanted to check everything out before signing for anything but I've got a copy of the t&c's and everything is hunky dory!0 -
Great! If your prime concern is them ceasing trading, if your own branch is busy it may be sold as a going concern anyway. The only thing to bear in mind is whether you are paying the DD to them for periodic/monthly membership, or to a finance company for a loan to buy outright a 6-month membership. Were that the case, you would still be paying that off even if the gym closed, and have to recover money from a (bankrupt) company (ie lose most of it).
Personally I would be treading with caution at the moment, big names are dropping off the high street (Woolies, Adams, Habitat, etc) and local franchises going where some companies stay alive!0 -
I was a member of Total Fitness in Huddersfield for nearly two years and it was a great gym to be in....clean, large and organised.
Compare that with the nightmare that is Fitness First in Leeds....shudder"We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -
Thanks again everyone. Paddyrg - we did think of that but it is just a monthly subscription to them no credit agreement involved. My old gym did it that way where I paid the finance company so I understand what you're saying. It is definitely just an agreement that we pay them a minimum of 6 months membership fees. We're also going to join the kids at 10 per year because it means we can take them swimming whenever we want and they can be looked after free for an hour when you're working out.
Anyway I've been this morning for my swim and did 1km which was enough seeing I haven't done any exercise for ages!!0
