the dreaded head lice

  • Hi, head lice treatment is free with pharmacy first service. This is a service that I believe some chemists are involed in and give free treatment to children, it's to reduce people going to the doctors when things aren't so serious. If you took them to the GP they'd get a free pescription so it's just the same realy, they do have to be with you though when you go for the stuff. Hope this helps :)
  • If your child seems to catch them repeatedly it is possible that you didn't get them all when you thought they were clear of them!

From remembering when my daughter was young (now 24 and no longer catching them thank god, lol) when they 1st hatched they were so small you could hardly see them and would be easily missed!

Eggs are laid, they hatch 7-10 days later and are mature (can lay their own eggs)6-10 days later, so to be certain a child is clear you need to nitcomb every other day for about three weeks at least!

Dont bother with the expensive treatments. Cheap conditioner and a Nitty Gritty Comb. No more nits !!
  • I use cheap conditioner and nit comb too, it's so much cheaper :) but when it's too bad I use the one from Wilkinson's it's only £5 and can treat upto 2 people :)

Hedrin among others contains silicone as do most adult products, also we tend to bath kids and send them to bed with damp hair, which is the perfect breeding ground.

I would dry with a hairdryer and use only adult shampoos and conditioners etc, so the build up of silicone stops them latching onto the hair.

Also avoid swimming pools, the critters can swim!

This is fab stuff, natural and takes just one treatment, you can order it in Boots. Only downside is it stinks!

Thank you for all of replies! I tend to use a nit comb and conditioner but is there anything that will deter them? i get rid of my kids headlice then couple weeks later they get it again its a right pain in the a***!!! :(

Comb out your own hair and your OHs too. My DD has long hair, I've got long hair. She's still at the cuddly stage so if she gets nits, I get them too, urgh. If I didn't nit comb my own hair I'd just pass them straight back to her. Her Dad is almost bald though so any nit jumping onto him would have to be into extreme sports, lol.

Another for the Nitty Gritty comb and normal conditioner.
  • Specialist treatments are generally unnecessary and unhelpful what with resistance building up and all. The only real cure is spending time, conditioning and nit combing, not only to get rid of them, but as part of your regular routine.

    The nitty gritty comb :D

We have one of these and they are really good. Got it from the local pharmacy under a tenner but i do know that in some parts of the country you can get them from drs also you can get nit lotion on prescription aswell.

I have just used conditioner and combed threw every night for the first few nights then do it again a week after i first found them but to be honest once ive found one im always checking their hair like a monkey mummy ha

My eldest boy never really got them but since my middle boy has started school in Jan he has come home with them about 4 times?!
