The AA site is fine, especially if you want to check out the general history of a car you are thinking of buying but it can sometimes be difficult to match up specific recalls to a specific car as you have to go through all the recalls of a model looking for build dates.
I can only speak for my own car manufacturer (though I'd be surprised if it didn't also apply to most others) Honda has a page that allows you to put in your VIN and identify any recalls specific to a particular car instantly.
