I work two part time jobs both the same hours 10 Both the same pay £6.25 a hour. So 20 hours total a week. my 1st job which i get paid every two weeks is my main job and i have a tax code 747L NORM. My second job which is monthly pay i am on a BR tax code. my final earnings at the end of the year on both jobs is £3120 x 2 = £6240
i dont pay TAX or NIC on my first job. On my second job I only pay Tax and NO NIC. My boss was trying to explain that i should not be on a BR tax code on my second job as a earn to little over the year on both jobs to be on a BR tax code.I think she said something along the lines of my tax code being split so i dont have to pay tax. Could anyone explain if she is right and what do i need to do if she is right. i have been on my BR tax code since november 2010

regards martin.

  • Usually this would be correct however because your total earnings for both jobs are below your personal allowance i would suggest you contact HMRC and request your allowances be split between both jobs. You may also find you are entitled to a rebate for 2010/2011 if this has been the case since Nov 2010.
  • when you say split between both jobs does that mean i will pay tax on both jobs but not at a BR level ?
  • all sorted. Rang HMRC and asked for my tax to be split :) 374 L on my 1st job and 373 T on my second job. Managed to phone off a 01355 number insted of the 0845 number. They didt like that but still delt with my claim :) Asked about a Rebate since ive been on BR code since Nov 2010 they siad they will let me know at the end of the tax year so fingers crossed. Thanks for advice

    Many kind regards Martin

Have you got your P60s from both jobs that they would have given you in april for last tax years earnings?

If so, you can see how much tax you paid on them, and then check if it was too much - have a look on http://listentotaxman.com/

There is a form on this website you can fill out to reclaim tax, you dont need to wait til the end of this tax year to reclaim tax for last tax year.
