Looks like there are PDF versions available to cost depends on the course; it also says something about a Pin code so that prospective employers can view the certificate online - not sure if or how much that'd cost? HTH.

The PIN code thing is free from what I can gather so prospective employers can check you have done the course.
  • I think that these (well, the 'diploma' courses, anyway) are the equivalent of a GCSE, if that helps anyone
  • Thanks for this! I'm due to start a health and social care course through the open university in October so I might do a few of these to get my brain working lol
The smaller ones are only 1-2 hours and you can apparently download the PDF certificate when you complete it.

I just paid on Fri - £400 for my hubbie to do a project management course - now this says they offer project management and the NQF is level 3 - this is equivalent to ALEVEL - which is the same as uk open learning are offering? - am I mad - should I send it back or is the open learning one a much better course on CV??

i'l be moving to america next year after I get married.. and was thinking of doing a medical Degree over there but only have grade D in my gcse science.. do you think if I did the health studies Diploma it would be accepted over in the US instead of the gcse?

Without meaning to sound unkind. I would be very surprised at you being able to study for a medical degree in the US with GCSE's. There are advantages to studying medicine in the US that they have pre-med years of study to try to get you up to speed and you don't specialise in medicine at the start.

But to try and put medicine in perspective in the UK you would need at least a grade A at A-level chemistry (bearing in mind you can now do better than grade A). With typical offers being over 3 A's at alevel. Obviously if you are a mature student then the offers might be slightly reduced but I would expect them to be looking for an undergraduate degree or a bear minimum of a good A-level in Chemistry (and ideally further a-levels in other sciences).

Medicine is extremely academic and unless there is a very good reason that you only got a D at GCSE science I would recommend thinking about studying something less academic.

The US will require you to pass SAT examinations before entrance - these will be far more important than any course you can study on this free site. Please be aware that these are non-trivial. (Nothing like UK SATs which are trivial). I suggest you get hold of some SAT books if you are serious about going to uni in the US.

To help in your logic here just answer the question - "Would you be happy knowing that the doctor treating you got a D at GCSE science?"

I'm not trying to put a dampner on your ambition or dreams, but typical medics would be looking at 10 or more GCSE's at grade A and above, 4 A-levels at grade A and above, combined with scientific interest, outside reading, and relevant work experience and generally have relatives in the medical field.

Perhaps a course like nursing might be more relevant?

I wonder why the pages load sooooooo slooooow! Maybe that's one of the reasons the courses are free...lol.
I have joined a course anyway to learn web page development. Will see how it goes. Good luck to anyone doing courses.

I am interested in photography so have started the karl taylor one on there, seems ok and quite clear explainations. There are a couple of videos that I have come accross that are so slow but I actually found the same on on youtube so watched it on there without it stopping. then went to watch all of his other ones on youtube, (greatphotographytips) He is a brilliant photographer. Love his landscape and sunset pics.

I looked through the other courses and may do a few others to refresh my brain.
    Thanks OP

Government grants? Also a small amount of revenue from advertising. Online businesses have very low overheads, and the government chucks money at training institutions. I was paid more in grants to do my CCNA ccourse with the OU than what I actually paid to the OU in the first place!
Thanks to all who post constructively.
