Wedding invite wording.....bit embarrassing

Hi there, partner and I have decided that instead of waiting a year to save up and get married we're doing it in 4 weeks on a very tight budget!!
We have got dress sorted (sample off rail in shop), bridesmaids dresses from TK Maxx sale, boys outfits from Next, which they will get lots of wear out of.
My problem is that we're having a "reception" at a local pub/resturant and will require guests to buy their own lunch. Now all our family are really happy about that (actually his Mum's idea) but how do we word the homemade invitations? I'm quite embarrassed to be honest but it's this or wait the year and we just want to be married.
Any ideas what to put and has anyone else been to this type of wedding and how did you feel?

Thanks so much :)

They just added prices and put on the front see over for menu and prices. Maybe this isnt the best way but made me laugh and wasnt bothered at all as we knew the couple well.

    Hi,

If you add this to the wedding section, you might get a few more responses. I've seen some poems on google along those sort of lines, saying instead of a gift pay for your food type of thing.

well if you word it nicely and decline gifts that would sweeten the blow...

perhaps don't phrase it as an invitation, which has the implication of a free meal but phrase it something like

Join us to celebrate our wedding. We are getting married at ... then going for lunch at....
Please choose your meal(s) from the enclosed menu so that we can place our order and it will be ready for us when we arrive. The restaurant is happy for you to pay for your meal in cash or by card. Naturally we don't expect a gift!

    Difficult one.
If I did this I would send a normal wedding invitation and enclose a handwritten note or telephone them explaining with you being on a tight budget that instead of presents etc you would prefer it if they paid for their own meal as you would love to have their company.

If I received an invitation like that I wouldn't think they were being cheeky expecting a present and the meal , though personally would be quite happy to do both.

Good luck and enjoy the wedding.

We’re getting married in a bit of a hurry,
But raising the funds is a bit of a worry,
Why wait a year when we can marry in weeks,
With help from our family and friends for the treats,

So please come join in with our frugal affair,
And pay for your meal if you would like to be there.

We held our Wedding on a budget too. We managed to pay for everyone's lunch because we had a small gathering for the main event.

We'd just moved house so we invited everyone else to a housewarming party with a Hog Roast in the garden, so they wouldn't feel obliged to buy presents or a new outfit and then surprised them with the news when they arrived.

My family made and decorated fairy cakes with free-artistic reign for the cake. My dress was an off-the rack ball gown. We did hire tables and chairs for the garden.

Everyone said it was the most relaxed wedding they'd ever been too. We got married in the registry office and walked to the pub for lunch, then walked home, had an afternoon nap before the evening party. Perfect.

We requested that no one bring gifts as we were perfectly sorted, but that their company would be the perfect present.

Well that's wonderful!! made me cry in fact. Thank you so so much, I was getting really worried about what to say but as we're only inviting people who know us well, this would be perfect. I don't want gifts just big hugs xxx :)
