Car boot sale newbie looking for advice

Hi Everyone

I'm attending my first ever car boot sale on Sunday and would really appreciate some advice. I have no idea what to price things at!? I understand that there'll be some haggling involved but what would you expect to see the following priced at for starters? My guesses are in brackets:

CDs each (50p)
DVDs each (£1)
Unworn womens jeans (£5)
Unworn long leather boots (£15)
Worn long leather boots (£5)
NICE river island handbag (£10)
Jewellery making book (£3)
Ipod charger with speakers (£10)
Computer chair good condition (£10)
Small going out bag (£5)

Thanks :)

I think it would also depend on how much the product has been used already. I mean if you state the condition.

In my area your prices would be far too high. Craft books would fetch no more than about 50p , Cds 20-30p, handbags around £1.

However it does depend on area and there are some tips on here:

  • Thanks to you both. Everythings in pretty good condition apart from the CD cases and a few of the books have dog ears. I've got a lot more things but thought it would be overkill to list them all.

Soolin those prices sound scarily low! I've never been to one before so guess I was thinking in realms of eBay prices. Will check out that link; thanks

You'll find people actually run businesses buying from car boot sales and re selling on ebay. I rarely take books at all now to car boots unless I have a lot of free room in the car, I usually end up giving them away. My Cds tend to end up on musicmagpie as well as at least I get 30p a go for most of them rather than peanuts at a boot.

My experience is that anything that you want to sell for £5+ don't take it to the boot sale. Ebay may be better for these kind of things.

Boot buyers are looking for cheap bargains. Any time I've done one the majority of my items have sold for under £2.
Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right! :D

    Hi!

I think your bags are way too high - i think you would be lucky to get between £2 - £5 for them....worn boots (obv not knowing what they look like) are an ok price, will prob get haggled to £3.50 - £4. The NEW (DEpeniding on what they are) I would put at £12 expecting to get £8 - £10....

From my experience cds sell really well.... the last bootsale we did we put tem up as 50p each or 4 for £1.50, dvds also sell realy well.

My clothes sold really well, river isalnd and topshop I was getting about £3 for a pair of worn trousers and jeans etc.

It depends how desperate you are to get the money and get rid of the stuff. I alswyas take half price signs and put them up half way through..... also you need to think what you would be prepared to pay for it...
Good luck! Hope the weather brightens up for you!
  • It varies by area and how big the car boot is.

Best thing to do is have a nose around and see what other people are charging.
  • Thanks everyone. Getting a much better idea of prices now. Especially after reading the bootsale sticky.

Also, I have this: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50133762 it's got a 'fuchsia pink' seat and a black backrest. GOOD condition, abot a year old. Auction is in North Somerset, any ideas on what I should price it at and what I could expect to get for it? I was thinking pricing it at £15 to get between £8 and £10?

I think you would be lucky to get many takers on a chair as it is unlikely to fit into many smaller cars and that limits your market. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get silly offers for it and have to bring it home again.
