already altered dress - can it be taken back out??

im looking for some help from a seamstress or similar - maybe linda??

I have been to see a Justin Alexander dress from ebay, the woman who was selling it bought it in a size 10 but had it taken in to a size 8, now i can get in it and zip it up but literally cannot move or breath out. Does anyone know whether it might be possible to have it taken back out?? The woman said she thinks when they took it in they cut the fabric off - if this makes sense. Im really hoping it can because its a third of the price i would be paying in the shop and this would probably be my biggest bargain yet!!

It would probably depend on how much fabric is left on the seams inside but it might be possible to have it let out by adding in extra fabric somewhere like a panel in the back maybe. I would phone some seamstresses in your area and ask if they could do it.

It would also depend on the fabric - if it's satin the let-out seams would leave track marks - rows of little holes where the old seam was, which might spoil the look. Definitely get in touch with a seamstress. I know Linda hasn't been on here much as she has been busy, so it might take a little while for her to answer - maybe send her a PM?

If you look inside the dress where the alteration was done you will see how much excess material is left as this will be the amount that can be taken out. If they have cut this off then i would assume they probably left as little material as possible as otherwise it would appear bulky and maybe show through.

You will have to bear in mind the fabric and the qualuty as it may leave tiny holes when taken out. You could always cover these with sequins, beads or diamontees depending on what the dress has on it.

I hope my reply was helpful. x
  • yes it was thank you linda. Ive decided not to get the dress as i didnt want the stress of needing to lose weight - im happy with the weight i am. Then low and behold my OH saw my dress that i was watching on ebay - and told me he didnt like it (not in so many words but that was basically the jist of it) so it put me right off. Off i went back to a local bridal shop to see the original dress i first fell in love with and she had another dress in - very very simliar but a bit more detailed - the last one in size 10, fitted me like a glove and was absoultely gorgeous!!! So as you can guess ive now bought that one - and with it being £1000 cheaper than the one i was going to get very MSE!!!
