Survey compiler Markit said that its closely watched Purchasing Managers Index for the services sector rose to 55.4 in July from 53.9 in June, confounding expectations for a slowdown after Monday's surprise fall in factory activity.
Markit estimated that based on the PMI surveys, the economy grew by 0.5 percent in the three months to July -- an improvement on the 0.2 percent recorded from April to June.
