I thought I would share this with you but I have no idea what other local authorities do....
For the last three years, our County Council has run a programme with its "twin" in Norway. Up to thirty 17&18 year olds come over from Norway on a scholarship type thing, to do a year of A levels at local schools here. This forms part of their overall education in Norway.
Anyway, they are here in term time and every year so far, the Council has had difficulty in finding host families.
We get paid £120 per week during term time, tax free. For this we have to provide a room for them to be able to have their own space, sufficient furniture, desk etc for studying, and three meals a day. The students are expected to be treated as part of the family, rather than as lodgers. They have never given us any problems in the three years that we have been hosting them.
For anyone with a spare room, it may be worth enquiring of your local education authority if they have similar schemes and to put your name down for later in the year?

Hi there hypno,we have been having foreign students stay with us for the past 15 years, certainly brings in some income, paid for many a ski trip!
Before we had kids we used to have about 4 at a time, chinese, french, arabic, italian and scandinavian, now we only have french and one at a time. The kids love it and they speak quite good french now, when we go to france,we often pop in and visit one or two of our favourites,we feel like we have an extended family.
I would recommend this to anyone, not just for the money, but it teaches your children about how others live.

I've been doing this through a language school but think I'll have to pay tax. As we have students year round except for xmas and our holidays we find it pretty intrusive and are looking forward to stopping. have done this for nearly a year now and it's been a lifesaver in terms of keeping us afloat during a sticky patch.CCs @0% £24k Dec 05 £19,621.41 Au £13400 S 12600 Oct £11,981 £9481 £7500 Nov £7250 D £7100 Jan 6950 F £5800 Mar£5400 May £4830 June £4660 July £4460 Aug £3200, S £900, £0 18/9/07 DFW Nerd 0420

Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:

when our two misbehave, we tell them that next year they will have to share a bedroom so that we can have another student in!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0
