Go for a new basic bank account with a bank not connected to anyone you owe money to - list here - http://yourmoney.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/HTML/en/products/bank_accounts/basic_bank_accounts_popup.htm Not sure all will operate these as joint accounts - is there a particular reason you need a joint account?

Co-op cashminder is popular on here if your existing account is not with them.

Do you already have joint accounts with your other half? are you already financially associated on your credit files? if not and you are going to default on some loans then you would be best keeping your finances individual and not going for a joint account.

  • thanks, no reason why we wanted a joint account as we don't have a joint one at the moment, just thought it would be easier for bills etc.

    i'll check out that list.

is it common for banks to decline you a new account with them?

If you apply for a standard account rather than a basic account it will be subject to a credit check - so it depends on your credit file and credit history etc.

There is no credit check for a basic account so you should be able to get one easier (and often quicker - providing they don't have problems confirming your identity/address etc)
