Over 6 years old debt?

am already on a payment plan with creditors and then today I get a letter from Lowell saying I owe HSBC, asked the woman and she said the debt is over 6 years and old and the last payment was in 2001 on the account? She seemed awfully keen to get it sorted, I questioned whether it was mine (it was) but isnt there a statute where a debt is disolved after a certain period of time?
any advise
thanks
