in Cutting tax
Hi all,
This week I received a letter from HMRC asking me to inform them how much NI I had paid in the last financial year, saying that they think I may have overpaid and may be due a refund.
I have two sources of income. Main job and some extra agency work paid through a different source and so they want details of both.
My question is though, what is the maximum you should be paying in NI?
Also, if they find that I have overpaid, can I claim back for previous years?
Many thanks,
mj

Thanks for quick reply and the useful link.
For the extra agency work, I am paid by the agency but through a payroll company, this allows me to claim certain things back against tax. Looking at the payslips that I have received, they seem to be taking my gross invoice value and then subtracting 'Employer's NI' to leave the Gross (taxable) salary.
After this a further NI deduction is made, which I assume to be Employee's NI.
Is this correct? It seems as though I am getting done twice for NI.
I may well be wrong as I know very little about tax/NI etc.
Also, for filing my returns as to how much NI I have paid, should I include the Employer's NI as well as the Employee's?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks for your help so far,

It is an umbrella company. Not IT, medicine!
It is not a tax return that I am filing, HMRC want me to inform them of all NICs from the last tax year as they think I may have overpaid. Just wondering if they want to know employers and employees or just employees?
Thanks again for all your helpJust started comping - 1/12/08 - keep your fingers crossed!0
