Need temp work for 7 weeks

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I've been self employed for the last 2 and a half years teaching private music lessons and I'm moving away to university in 7 weeks. The work has dried up somewhat and I've been a bit too honest perhaps with people enquiring for lessons about my move so haven't taken on any new students in a while. I'm earning very little and need some temp work to tide me over until university. I live at home and my mum and dad have said I don't have to pay board for the next 7 weeks if I don't find anything but I don't like that idea ... I'm going to apply for an exception for national insurance, I wonder if there are any other ways of cutting back? My car insurance will need to be cancelled when I go and i've been paying more each month as it's payable over 9 months, do you think they would allow me to come to some arrangement so I pay a bit less in august and september?

Thanks for all your help :)

If you're cancelling your car insurance, I assume you're selling your car, which should give you a bit of money. If you're not selling your car will it be kept on private land, because you could then SORN it and save a bit more money.

Is your instrument something which is taught in schools? Can you advertise a short summer course of lessons?

  • Hey Dazza,

Can you not continue your music lessons, start taking some students back on?

I know quite a few teachers that offer lowered price lessons via Skype etc. If you're teaching to younger students who would be willing to do this while you're away at Uni.

If you want to move away from teaching constantly. Why not hire a good DSLR camera for a few weeks, one that takes really crisp video, like the Canon 5D II and record a series of tuition lessons for the beginner. You could then put them up online as a series, sell them through a web site. Once it's up there, you can sell it many times over. That would be a good source of income throughout your entire time at Uni.

If you want some quick cash now, ebay, car boot all those things you don't need. You can combine it with packing for uni. :)

I want to move away from teaching completely, never wanted to do it in the first place to be honest it was just a way of moving away from retail. I know teachers who teach on skype but I don't agree with it and I've already set my students up with a new teacher for when I leave. I have very little left to sell on ebay haha, and was hoping to save what I make from the things I do have for uni. I just need something quick and simple to do for work to tide me over really but it seems to be hard to find...
  • I'm guessing you've already looked on the job centre website for temp work but there are often leafleting jobs which are good one offs, hard work though!

Leafleting would be ideal, any suggestions where to look? And yes applied for the few temp jobs on the job centre site but heard nothing.
  • If you google search leaflet distribution jobs theres a few sites come up, I've noticed them on the job centre website before too. Maybe look in your local paper/shops to see if there are any adverts up. Lots of takeaways give out menus. I did leafleting one summer for my old driving instructor for a bit of extra cash, I'd ask around anyone you know. Good luck!
