One thing I do is my weekly 'offer run' - basically, visit the big 4 near me (Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Iceland), and buy *only* the stuff thats on offer (and that I actually need, of course), Once that's done, then I review my list and buy the stuff I still need. Usually, I'll have substituted a few things on the list with things that are on offer, and possibly stocked up on a few non-perishables. Also, if you're doing your offer shop seperately to your full-price shop, you'll often find your receipts will give you a bit of a discount off your next shop when you run them through the Tesco/Asda price checkers.

Might also be worth visiting Tesco's etc late in the evening when they knock the prices down a bit on certain items. My sister does this, she has to feed 3 very hungry boys. The bargains she gets is sometimes mind blowing.
