Car discount for public sector workers.

Anyone know anything about this? Im told that Hursts are offering teachers a discount off cars if you are a teacher? Its aprox £1500 on a new astra. Im just wondering if anyone has used this or is aware of any other companies doing this?

Thanks

F
ps I know Hursts are awful but im trying to look past that!

Yes brother told me that there is 3% off if you work in public service. This offer is also available with the current 0% over up to 5 years with no deposit. (I think there is a 100,000 mile warranty for the first owner too)
    Regards, Robin.

I'd avoid Hurst's like the plague!

We got a price for a new car from the internet (Broadspeed.com), took it to a local dealer and he matched the price, even though it was a model in high demand. Not a Vauxhall but more than a 3% discount.

    Worth a try.

Must be a very special Astra if it has a £50,000 list price!

I got that discount 3 years ago from riverside even though I couldnt prove public sector employment. I said I had worked for the NHS but had left in 2000 - and seems I was still entitled to it

Im kind of thinking it would be a general discount they use under many guises, bet if you said you only wear green socks they would find a discount for you :)

The new car trade is slow at the moment so any buyer of a new car will get a discount if they ask for it.

A lot of cars are overpriced in the first place to allow for discounting or a favourable trade-in allowance

I'd suggest that this is carefully targetted marketing, aimed at the overstaffed (for now) and bloated public sector here in NI. They seem to be suggesting that public sector workers are somehow superior or saintly compared to others doing the same or similar work in the private sector.
I'd like to think a nurse is equally hard working and caring in a private hospital as they are in an NHS hospital, and I'd like to think that teachers at private schools are as good as teachers in a state school. Then again, if I'm paying huge fees, shouldn't I be expecting better, shouldn't the nurses/teachers etc in the private sector be the BEST??

As Ballyblack and Suki1964 pointed out, anyone prepared to do a bit of homework (including looking at mainland dealers) will be able to do some very hard haggling with any motor dealer and do much better than 3%..

'discount' is a funny thing. Would you rather I gave you 3% off the £10,000 car, or would you take the £9,000 - straight sale, no discount. Both the same car, but the £10,000 sounds better because you're getting it discounted. Do your research before such a big purchase, and don't do your research with a car dealer!

Vauxhall has a "partners" discount scheme if you Google it. I was offered a discount of £2450 off a £14000 Corsa. If I was trading in a Vauxhall I would have got more discount. I found Ballyrobert Vauxhall at Mallusk easy to talk to, much more approachable than Hursts.

    a discount of £2450 off a £14000 Corsa.

    £14,000 for a corsa?

easy to give discount as the 'list' price is highly inflated in the first place

Yes it is easy to get a discount of 10% but what I was offered was 16-17%, it all helps!!
