Teacher in need of new career, help please.

I'm afraid I disagree. I know quite a few teachers who have gone on to do other things. It depends on how well you can sell yourself and you'd be surprised as to how transferable the skills of a teacher actually are.purplegirl2 wrote: »I am afraid it is too hard to change to another industry, you may be a free time teacher ,the salary is also high and you have enough free time with your family0 -
Hi
OP you may want to look into Sure Start Children's Centres - your teaching experience would fit in with many of the roles, and a number of local authorities have 'qualified teacher' posts working either in specific centres, or across an AXS Cluster. I know several teachers who decided to move away from classroom teaching for various reasons, to these posts - which they thoroughly enjoy. Posts are often advertised through the Local Authority, but also register with the key charities e.g., Action for Children, Barnardos, The Children's Society etc - who tender to hold the contracts for Sure Start - though each county is slightly different.0 -
Thought they were closing a lot of the sure starts which means any displaced staff would be first in line for any jobs at remaining centres?0

The requirement to have a qts in childrens centres was removed last year. They have been dramatically hit by funding cuts. I have not seen national figures but in our region I estimate that 50 per cent have been made redundant with more to follow.June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -
My friend was a maths teacher, but hated it. She managed to successfully change careers and is now an accountant. She had to start off on a 17k position (in London) but after two years got a 30k role somewhere else and now (after 5 years) is fully qualified and can command a 50k salary. This may or may not be an option for the OP but I am posting just to prove that it is possible to get out of teaching, if you are prepared to start at the bottom again. She had to sit all her accountancy exams though which took up a lot of her free time, so although it was worth it for her in the end may not be an option for everyone.
The example shown above is just one example of what the OP has to do to get a comparable profression to the one she/he has at the minute. I have been through a professional chartered qualification. I was on the salary half that of my teacher comtempories for several years after graduating. Often working up to 60 hours a week (only being paid for 37.5 hours with 3 weeks holiday a year) as well as studying for professional exams in the evening and sitting final exams which were so tough that only 40% of the people who sit them pass.0 -
OP? Are you there? Your pertinent question has been hijacked I feel!
As others have asked, it would be useful to know:
The subject of your degree;
Any prior experience;
Any passions/hobbies etc. that may point the way forward?
A lot of the education related suggestions, e.g. connexions and sure start centres are being cut back and, in some cases, cut OUT of the system. Until you have a clearer idea about the direction you like to go in, is it possible to discuss prospects at your current school and get a job covering PPA? or 1-2-1 tutoring within the school? I know some teachers who have done this and are, literally, in at 8.30, out at 3.30, with no work to take home with them - all on a teacher's salary! Sweet!
Otherwise, as others have said - leaving teaching means a DROP in salary, as I know. I am poor, but much much happier! And am now looking forward to the way forward to another career in my mid-forties!
Good luck!0 -

!
The pertinent question was "career change" - the clue is in the title of the thread.
You are discussing staying in the the same career.0
