I am quite a fan of Checkmyfile (we recommend it to clients fairly regularly particularly if we are struggling to understand some specific problem, unexpected decline or conflict information) - its prices are competitive, the presentation of the site is easy to use, the content informative - its greatest strength is its easily accessible (0800) helpdesk staffed by excellently trained staff whose job is to help/advise you rather than obstruct as too often appears to be the case with the actual credit data holders.

    Its weaknesses are:

    1) Public record level data from Experian (full data as a mortgage lender will see it from Equifax and CallCredit - and you can argue that understanding what lower level credit providers will see is usefull)

    2) You can't print from the site at the moment

Obviously if you have an issue which you can't expalin from a lender who uses Experian as prime source then you need to look at Experian reports

thanks for the reponse. we were rencently declined for a mortgage, our broker is going to appeal and we needed to know what was on my report, for some reason experian wanted proof of my address first so im still waiting to see my account. check my file allowed me to view within a few days, i have one defaulted account on it, i guess this is why we got declined, my broker said had we knew about it before halifax might still have considered us. the default account was closed last year, i was just concerned in case they could see something we couldn't... check my file doesnt seem as 'mainstream' as the others

the best way is still to get a copy of your statutory report from all 3 (Experian, Equifax and Call Credit) at a total one off cost of £6, the online subscription services just aren't worth it, and full of added value 'fluff' like pointless credit scores. All the credit information a lender will look at, will be contained in the statutory report. It's important that you get a copy from all 3, as the data can vary, and they each have their 'quirks' (equifax's dodgy 'outstanding debt' table 1 searches, call credit showing information > 6 years old occasionally).
    It's a health benefit ...
  • I used CheckMyFile to see all 3 main credit reports and found it very useful; it told me what might be seen as a problem, I fixed it, I've now got a mortgage offer!
I think I signed up for a 3 month monitoring service for £14.99. Yes, it's more expensive than the direct statutory reports, but I found the extra information very helpful, and I could tell straight away when the information had been updated and my file was clear again.
