I've been a student at the Open University for a number of years. I recently signed up for my next course, which starts in January 2012. I'm paying for it through the Open University Student Budget Account. This is a credit agreement and they make returns to credit reference agencies.
So far as I can tell, you are guaranteed to be accepted (I was and I only just got AD). So I reckon it's a great credit builder.
Plus, if you sign up for a course starting next year you will avoid the MASSIVE fees hike for new students that kicks in the following year.
