Default from 1st credit limited issues.

Husband checked his credit report at experian today to find a default has been placed on there by a company called 1st Credit Limited. It states he defaulted on the 24/10/2005, we're a little confused as he left the UK to live in Canada between 2003/2006 and had cleared all bills and bank accounts before leaving. We don't have a clue what debt this could possibly be.
I'm assuming that if he'd stupidly forgotten to pay something before leaving, that it would be statute barred by now anyway.
I'm about to murder him as our credit rating looks like poo now and we've worked very hard to keep it perfect and payments up to date to this point. Any ideas/advice would be most appreciated.

Hi Kitty,
When a default is placed on somenes credit file the company placing the default must send the person a notice giving them 14 days to settle the account before the default gos onto the credit file, so if this wasn't received then it should not have been placed on your husbands credit file. However, defaults stay on someones credit file for a total of 6 years from the date they are applied, so this one should drop off the file in October 2011. Debts only become statute barred 6 years (5 in Scotland) after there has been no written acknowledgement of them or any payment made towards them, so my advice would be to sit tight until October. However, shortly after getting a copy of my credit file, I started to get harassed by a debt collector for 2 statute barred debts, so if they contact your husband, communicate only in writing and come back onto the forum for assistance, as you can start by sending them the prove it letter. Don't under any circumstances let them bully or harass you either.
Good luck
RedIf you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.

I think Red is right and the "prove it letter" (search the forum for posts with it in) might be the best thing to start with.
Let him live whilst you find out if it is really his debt

Phew, that's pretty much what I hoped for. I wasn't sure of when the default would drop off but it makes me feel a lot less worried to know it won't affect us for long. Thank you both for the help :P0
