Canapes???

I have had a bit of a shock this afternoon after having a caterer on the phone at the price of canapes.

Now, our wedding is at 2.30, so I'm thinking that by the time we sit down to eat it's going to be 5.30-6ish, and I'm having a BBQ, so no starter. I think that's quite a long time milling about, and I know I would be getting peckish and with welcome drinks as well, possibly tipsy!!!

I have been quoted £6.50 a head for canapes, with an average amount of 5 per person. Now, I think that's a lots personally, but having never ordered them before I don't actually know if it is.

What sort of quotes have other people had?

Not had any quotes but what about getting cold selection packs from supermarkets and dips. Is this your only quote cause I would see if you can get quotes from other companies

I have just been talking to my cheif bridesmaid who has said that at another wedding she went to they had people walking round with tins of sweets instead of canapes, what a fab idea!!!
Our wedding is developing a kind of sweetie/choclate theme, being Easter, so this would be great!

Wow, that is a lot of money. My thinking is: We had a 2.30pm wedding, sitting down to eat by 6 and served canapes around 5pm (mostly 'cos the wedding service went on till 4.15pm though!) and I think they were very welcomed by our guests who were definitely hungry, especially the kids. That said I'm not sure canapes really soak up that much alcohol so if your concern is stopping people being tipsy, I don't think canapes will do it!

Alternatives - bowls of crisps, peanuts, sweets, olives, etc - might be cheaper and would give people something to nibble on!
  • I have to agree with everyone else. The way forward is high carb, filling snacks that will amuse people. Little bags of Haribo, retro sweets to get people talking, crackers and cheese maybe?
  • It isn't a bad price for canapes - but agree that some snacks could be done cheaper.

Congrats on thinking sensibly. SIL got married at 12.30, dinner at 6pm and had a few olives for the 5.5hrs in a venue that sold no food - 12 miles from nearest shop! We had been stuck before and ok sarnies - we could have made a killing!

We marry at 12 and the meal will be around 3 so folks have time to wander round the zoo...we're probably going to have some nibbles around but if people are really bothered the venue coffee shop will be open or they can grab a burger round the zoo!

We got married at 12.30, most people arrived at the reception by 2pm and canapes were served then. The meal was at 4.

The canapes went down a treat and i think if we hadnt had them people would have been hungry as most left their houses before 12, probably eating earlier than that or maybe skipping lunch all together. We paid £7 for 5 canapes per person and waitresses distributed them whilst people were mingling during photos etc.

5 per person was an ideal number i think. There werent any left over anyway!
