Can anyone suggest a good and easy recipe for vegetarian gravy?
I usually just do Bisto instant veg gravy, but it seems tasteless somehow and would like to make one from scratch, but it needs to be quick and easy!
I've checked through the recipe collection but cannot find one, so if anyone can help I'd be very grateful.
Thanks

This is off the top of my head:
Onion
Carrot
Celery
Leeks
Bay leaf
Herbs (Thyme, Oregano, Basil, etc)
Boil everything with water for a few hours and strain. Add corn flour to thicken.
You could look at Bovril. I'm sure that's ok for Veggies now. Try adding that to above mixture or just thicken some Bovril with corn flour for superfast gravy.TL0 -
try the kallo vegetable stock cubes, they are organic and i use them to make gravy, agree with making a veg stock first, but just the cubes may be okay, you can get them in asda0

For the record, it's not just the "vegetarian" bisto granules that are actually vegetarian - the original ("favourite") and onion granules are both suitable for vegetarians and vegans too. (Looks like the powders are too, according to the bisto website).
Bovril was suitable for vegetarians until a couple of months ago, but then they re-added beef extract (AFAIK). Marmite's okay though.
There's a gravy section on vegweb, which is usually pretty good: http://vegweb.com/index.php?board=256.0Sealed Pot Challenge 5 - #1742 :j0 -

I do this but instead of cornflour use the bisto browning powder which is suitable for veggies.
A splash of red wine also helps.0 -
Marigold bouillon powder is good for adding a bit of flavour and also makes good soups. There are several versions of Marigold but all are vegetarian. Mind you soups and gravies with Marigold in them all tend to taste the same whatever you make them from!
Using Bovril is OK if you want to make mock meaty gravy but a lot of vegetarians don't want to be reminded too much of meat.0 -
1 tsp cornflour
1/2 glass gravy powder
1/2 glass wine/sherry or beer (optional) or cold water
1/2 tsp yeast extract
1/2 vegetable stock cube
1 tsp tomato sauce
1 tsp soy sauce
1 latge mug of hot water ( use vegetable water if possible)
dab of butter
Mix cornflour and gravy powder to a runny paste with the alcohol or cold water in a small saucepan. Add yeast extract, crumbled stock cube, tomato sauce and soy sauce and stir well. Mix in the hot water, stirring well to prevent gravy going lumpy. bring to boil, still stirring and beat in butter. Simmer for 2-3 mins until thick and smooth.
I got this one from my fav veggie recipe book 'No meat for me please' by Jan Arkless, it's really nice. The book is cheap on Amazon too.

That sounds lovely, suep. The ingredients are similar to those Bryanna Clark Grogan uses as seitan cooking liquid and that's really nice (though too thin to use as gravy - I never thought of thickening it with cornflour).

I use Comtons Gravy Salt. Its about 60p from Morrisons and consists of cornflour, caramel(brown) and salt. It is one of the very few to have no nasties in it. Most gravy products have monosodium glutamate in them which is often disguised by calling itself hydrolysed vegetable protein or other innocuous sounding names. Anyway you just heat the C G S upin a pan with cornflor and water or stock( I use the carrot water when I do a roast) and as it boils it thickens into a delicious brown gravy. Meat eaters can then add any meat juices for a "meaty" flavour.earn what you can, save what you can, give what you can :hello:0
