Debt of £38.19 from 1998! Help!

Hi to all you learned people on this forum, just need some reassurance really if you wouldn't mind obliging. I just had a call from a company who have told me I owe £38.19 and that they have taken the debt off Peter Craig catalogue littlewoods group, I told the lady on the phone that I had no recollection of such a debt, she then told me that an amount of £11.00 had been received, I asked her what date this payment had been made, to which she replied 1998!!
I told her I hadn't a clue what she was talking about and said I never ran a peter craig catalogue, (I might have done but I just can't remember it its been that long ago!)
I also stated that even if the debt was mine, which it wasn't, then due to the statute of limitations the debt would be void anyway.
She then replied that they can still pursue debts over 6 years old but they just can't take me to court. She said that as I have disputed the debt they would be investigating further.
Please could someone tell me if I've done the right thing here and said the right thing. Some advice or reassurance would be much appreciated, thank you for your time.

Wow thanks notoolate!
That's a pretty powerful letter! Just one more question please if I may trouble you further?
It says at the end of the letter:-
We would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above accounts unless you can provide evidence of both:
(1) proof of my liability regarding this debt.
and
(2) payment or written contact from me in the relevant period under Section 5 of the Limitation Act.
What if they do find evidence of both?

they won't as it's clearly statute barred
if they do find any evidence then it would clearly be faked/forged so you would report them for fraud
its statute barred and they know it.0 -
Sorry nottoolate, "faked, forged" what if I did have a catalogue then, I vaguely remember something I had back then....:o0

yes they can try to get the money back but as they have to go through the courts to get baliffs or to visit your home the only way they can do it is by convincing you that you have some moral obligation to pay .Bluebelle72 wrote: »She then replied that they can still pursue debts over 6 years old but they just can't take me to court. Capquest wanted me to pay a debt from 1997 but when I told them the debt was statue barred and I would not be paying it they left me alone.
Looks like they are going after really old debts and hoping people won't know the statue of limitations act 1980.
I know some debts have gone back to 1985 and they getting the debtor to pay up only for the debtor to find out about the limtations act and claim it back.I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
Just because a debt is statue barred doesn't mean it ceases to exist.
If you owe the money, you still owe it till settlement or death - they just can't chase you through the courts.0
