Hey guys.
I just had a man knock on my door claiming to try and help me stop baliffs coming to my door. basically he had my details and a letter saying i had a debt with HSBC bank from 2000. He said he wasnt a baliff but then tried to tell me that baliffs could come to my house and repossess my items if i dont pay off this debt. He also tried to slyly get his foot inside my door to when i kindly asked him to remove himself from my step or i will call the police to which he replied, no no im not a baliff.
So, basically, i have a guy turn up at my door trying to get money from a debt from the year 2000.
What are my steps now? ive tried to order a credit report from experian. registered, foned them up but they now want photo ID and a utility bill sent to them. All i want to do is check to see if i have a CCJ and to see if this debt can be enforced or not, is there any other faster ways?
Cheers guys

I would tell him to take a hike, or words to that effect!! And if he puts a foot in your doorway, phone the police, don't just threaten. Flamin' cheek of him. I'm really angry for you. :mad:Always remember, every cloud has a silver lining:rotfl:0

tell him to sling his hook on no unceartain terms....bahhhhh"We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0

I doubt there is a CCJ - if there were it would be bailiffs not a debt collector. Good that you got mad with him and stood your ground.
You can check out the registery trust online for a quick answer regarding CCJs - it does cost £8 per address you search though.
Do you even think you did have an old unpaid HSBC debt? Don't suppose you got his name or the name of who he works for?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
You need to check the Registry Trust on-line for CCJs. it costs but there is no ID check.
I actually think you need to ring the police about this, as it is likely that he is doing this to lots of people. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
hey guys, thanks for replies.
Ok, i ran 2 searches on the trust website for both my addresses and they both came back with no ccj's.
So, if they knock on my door again, what do i actually say to them and what dont i say to them so i dont get myself this debt.

The cheek of some of these people!
1) You know you dont have a debt
2) Even if you did, it's statute barred by now which means that they couldnt go to court and couldnt get a CCJ against you now anyway. Which means no debt collector and certainly no bailiff. Dont be frightened, this is a person with no authority trying to gain unlawful entry to your property...treat him as a potential security risk and perhaps an outright criminal.
3) This sounds like high-pressure selling tactics - underhanded but not illegal. Tell him to get lost and dont feel you have to be polite about it either if he puts his foot in the door again. The bottom line is you dont owe this shyster a brass farthing and he has no right to be there. You couldnt 'get this debt' by saying the wrong thing at all.
4) Call the police if he wont leave or continues to call on you and report harrassment and intimidation
5) Find out where he is from and send a stiff letter to OFT regarding the tactics of the company in question, copied to your local MP and the paper if you feel like the notoriety
6) Tell him you revoke his right to knock at your door and consider any further intrusion into your life as trespass.
My guess is that this is high-pressure sales and he is not a debt collector, but either way, you dont want him back.
Final thought....review the security of your home and check your locks are sound and that the doors and windows are secured before leaving. I doubt this is an attempted distraction burglery, but I wouldnt be complacent.
Anyone you really owed money to would be sending you letters and calling your phone. Anyone knocking at the door uninvited should be viewed with deep suspicion and that goes for the supposed 'men from the gas board' too. At best, he's a salesman, at worst, a criminal who is scoping the place. Dont tell him anything you wouldnt tell the average stranger in the street, not your name, your date of birth even if they do want it for 'security checks'. Dont ever sign anything at the door and never invite them in. They're like vampires, once invited its a !!!!!! to get rid of them again without a banishing spell (in this case, the police would do nicely for that purpose).Debt Free! Long road, but we did it
