Sure I understand how difficult it can be for companies in this situation particularly small companies. But those who have not been pregnant and unemployed (or 'vulnerably employed' as i was) can't understand how stressful that is also. Luckily I was made permanent before I started to show, but that was only due to a permanent member of staff leaving and me getting her post. Had she not left, I'd have been out on my ear (due to temp contract ending) when I was starting to show (about 5 months) . My strategy if it had happened, would have been to start to look for jobs earlier when I didn't look pregnant (and failing that wear a very big coat) and basically lie through my teeth until I had got a new job. And probably have a difficult time of it once they found out in the new job too. I couldn't afford not to work because I needed the money

So person A cannot be duped, but person B (the owner of a small business fighting for survival) can..

And you are a feminist... and argue here over discrimination...

Out of interest.. what if you were the owner of business, one woman band, and this other person's lying through their teeth tipped you over the edge and you went bankrupt?

I don't think it is an issue over discrimination... it is issue over the system..

Neither can afford 30 weeks pregnant woman STARTING - the woman, nor the business.

AGAIN - different issue is when woman AT THE JOB gets pregnant.

But I'd only feel the need to lie because of the attitudes of people on here (which presumably are representative of attitudes in general!) If I was sure you wouldn't not offer me the job because I was pregnant (and ok I would not have been 30 weeks but about 20 weeks when temp contract ended, in this market could easily have been 30 weeks and still looking) then I would have no need to lie!

Weren't you saying something about morality before???

By the way the lying wasn't the point of the post... Read it again.

Just been reading all the posts again and it strikes me that several posters on here fail to understand the distinction between criminal law and employment law.

Just to be clear though, OP do not worry. Plod will not be forming a taskforce, tracking you down and hauling you up before the beak.

Any - Basically we are arguing over who has the greater right to survive, the company or the employee. I am obviously on the employee's side, you and the majority of posters here are on the company's side. I don't think we can get any further than that.

So ani, it's better for a company to not survive and everyone who works there to be out of work, than for one individual person not to get one specific job, instead of the person who did get it.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

Probably not, but you're assuming one pregnant employee will bring down the whole company I'd say that's pretty unlikely unless the company is doing really badly anyway in which case it would probably not survive long anyway. I mean something's got to be really wrong for one person going on mat leave to scupper the whole company

if you were 30 weeks pregnant and soon to be going on maternity leave, would you think that you're the best person for the job? or do you think a temporary contract would suit you better?
