I stand (somewhat) corrected - I was referring to the modern state pension in the form we know it.

State pensions were introduced in 1908 but not everyone was eligible. The modern state pension came into being in 1948 at the time of the introduction of the National Health Service.

I reached 65 on the 2nd of the month but have been told by the pension office they will only start paying my pension from the 8th the the month. They told me this was due to the pension only being paid from the first pay date after you reach 65. I will loose out 6 days pension. How can they get away with this. I have paid for 50 years towards my state pension and expected to be paid from my 65th birthday. How much are they making out of all of the pensions coming up. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm impressed that you are so angry about missing out on 6 days state pension that you've set up a username just to have a moan about it.

I hope you don't die anytime soon and lose even more money - you'll be livid!

As far as I can see in that Beeb history, "In 1928 it was revamped and targeted at all workers, .." was the big change after the initial introduction.

They don't quote any evidence to suggest that the 1948 changes were as big, so I take it that that claim is just the usual Labour Party propaganda.

I am guessing you are male, Selina, if you had to wait till 65. Or did you opt for a deferred pension?
That said, of all the hard luck stories I have heard recently, this has to be the least hard! I can see the point in that one would expect the first payment to be backdated to the actual birthday. I believe this was the case with my occupational pension.
But remember that some people are having to wait years beyond their anticipated date. I wouldn't expect much sympathy from that quarter.

If this is your worst loss in the grand lottery of life, then you have a very happy retirement to look forward to (after the first 6 days)

Women are having an accelerated hike to 65. Haven't you been watching the news? Look it up.
