    Some great advice thanks.

Unfortunately the chilli is for children too so I have to have some mild. I'm serving tortillas, guac, slasa, sour cream etc.. and will keep some of it hot for those BIG BRAVE MEN :D pmsl

Have sent OH out for some yoghurt and may try the potato and mushroom method too. (YES I have THAT much chilli !) If they dont work I'll just have to split the other lot, bulk it out to soften the blow and freeze the rest.

I'll report back on the effectiveness of these methods - ooh feel like im doing some sort of school experiment now!

BTW did I mention that OH used to work as a qualified chef!

    Cheers everyone

great it'll be really interesting to hear what works well

serve milk to the kids whilst they are eating it cos its meant to help neutralise the burn. also sugar and honey are meant to help take the heat out or a burny mouth but I've not tried those methods myself.

I hope its delicious for you all :)

Thanks OK, I was just relieved that someone else thought it was a good idea and it wasn't just another of my bonkers ideas.

  • To reduce the extra spicyness, chop a lemon in half and stir for a few minutes, then remove the lemon....saw this tip from an Indian chef on BBC's Trade Secrets programme.

    HI all

I took all of your advice and thought i'd post my findings on the chilli challenge :D

OK first I tried the yoghurt in a small amount - didnt work im afraid. The yoghurt split and it was just didnt seem very nice having a creamyish chilli.

So I put in some chunky cut mushrooms and made some potato wedges to put in. I cooked it off for a while and it did help a little ( I baked the wedges afterwards and they were really quite nice and went down a treat with the blokes. I think they would have been even nicer if id left them in overnight then baked them. Mushrooms were put out in a bowl after warming them up in the microwave - were nice too. Like the wedges - bung em on the side with some sour cream and guac. lovely.

They took a little heat out of the chilli but not loads ( but are a lovely way to do wedges anyway and I'll do them again).

After that I put in another can of tomatoes, and the best thing I found was grating a few carrots and popping it in. They gave a nice new slant on it and brought some sweetness which seemed to help cool the heat.

So thankyou all for your help - all of the food was eaten so it must have worked.

Ross - just seen your suggestion sounds a good idea may have to give that a try next time OH has another chilli frenzy.

Hi. I don't know whether it's appropriate to ask, but there is a poster who works as a chef (Talon Karrde). You could be cheeky and ask them.

I've made a cracking chilli but its far too hot for my missus and I've got loads left over. How can I make it milder?
