could be regional offices with meetings held at a different branch; or a good reason for a day out and a p!ss up

if thats the case then save costs like the other departments have done

Not a regional office, just basically an excuse to have a drunken night which to me is not a need of the job that needs to come first!

After yesterday's meeting as I said it was not anything that is relevant to the job I do and also as a contractor doesn't benefit me in anyway to do the job.

I still don't agree with the comments about it not being mentioned, if you are expected to stay away from home then I still think it should have been. If I did have a young family, I would also have to think about childcare.

That is besides the point. My point is that if I did, they don't even take that into consideration. It's just sod whatever else you need to do in your own time.

    .

why does the need of a job come first at night? and why does the need of the job need to come first at all if they have no issue with a day out from the office?

Sounds like you're complaining when you've got a good deal; you get a day out of the office for a 'meeting' and when that's done you get leathered. Hand your notice in, there are thousands of people who'd love to take your place.

you're onto a winner, sit back and enjoy it.

What's the real reason you don't want to go? Let's take it from there ...

OP your choice is probably binary

    a) Go to the meetings. Involve yourself and try to make them worthwhile and as enjoyable as possible. After a while and with your feet under the table you could sensibly query the need for the offsite

    b) Immediately kick up a major fuss and /or refuse to go - In which case good luck with your job search...

If your work performance and attendance is absolutely exemplary, I very much doubt they would get rid of you for the sake of your non-attendance at what appears to be a once a month jolly (particularly given that this is only a maternity cover position, so you're going to be gone soon enough anyway).

If you really really don't want to go, simply say "I'm really sorry, I wasn't aware that I'd have to sometimes work outside of normal working hours and I have a prior commitment which means I won't be able to attend". No-one's going to turn up at your house and kidnap you.

On the downside though, you may find that you end up feeling slightly excluded - unaware of matters that have been discussed, and unable to get involved in the chitter chatter about what went on socially.

The "should they/shouldn't they have discussed it interview" debate is meaningless. They didn't, and no amount of 'should have' will turn back time so they can do it differently. You are where you are, you just need to decide how to handle it. The options are go to the meeting or don't go to the meeting. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Only you can decide which ones are most important to you.
