they can't repair or replace it!?

Options
Hi,

I have a 10" tablet that is almost 7 months old - it has a fault which it has had since new but it's only apparent when on charge so I've been putting up with it by not using it when it's charging.

I eventually decided to take it in to the store for repair after reading a few success stories on the internet.

Now they have accepted straight away with no fuss that it is faulty and that it would be sent away for repair, it came back with the same fault so has gone away again - they have said that if it can't be repaired by the 18th of August that they will give me store credit for the origional purchase value.

I'd be happy with a repair or a replacement or a refund but I don't want store credit - am I entitled to refuse store credit and make them either get hold of a replacement from another store or offer me a refund (this is assuming they can't repair it again which looks likely)

Thanks for any advice,
worto.

edit - oh and I did read the guide and FAQ but couldn't find much about store credit vs refund in there.

If you're happy with a replacement, why not just buy another one with the store credit?

You don't have to put up with store credit but if you're after a replacement from them then what's the issue, surely you can use the credit to buy the replacement. However, if its a cash refund you're after bear in mnd they are entitled to deduct an amount based on the usage you've had up until now. No harm in asking though.

If a repair is unsuccessful you are entitled to a different resolution but that could well be a replacement. If the replacement is for the same value as the original purchase you might find you're better off, because a refund might well be reduced on account of your having had 7 months' use already. But they're not offering you a replacement; they're offering you store credit.

Often 'store credit' is, to all extent, synonymous with 'replacement' simply because you can take that credit and buy a replacement. However, if they have nothing suitable in store then stand your ground and ask for a refund or that they find you a suitable replacement. I don't think this is unreasonable and would go as far as to say you'd have the law on your side.

I'm guessing they don't have any in store.

Thanks guys - your right they don't have any in stock and they are a bit thin on the ground accross the country now.

The problem with the store credit is that I'd have to put an extra £150 of my own money in to get something else I consider equivilant to what I've got - there is nothing else on the market at the moment the same spec as mine for £200 - £250.

I'm sure there will be soon so I could always sit on the store credit until something comes up but I'd prefer to be able to shop around for the best deal in a few months than be tied in to somewhere with store credit.

I guess I'll stand my ground and see if I can make them find one from another store or refund me?

It was the Advent Vega which I paid £240 for, it retails at £200 now when you can find one.

I also bought the case for it for £20 so if they refund it I'll need them to refund the case too as it'll be no use to me without the tablet? Gonna be an interesting conversation I'm sure!

Yup, you can still get them, but the store would have to order it in, which would take a few days. BUT stock is low on the ground because a replacement is being shipped out called, surprisingly enough Vega 2
