o/s veg growers + gardeners - help!!

general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=60189

hi all
this is the picture of my garden. I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas what i can do with it. As you can see it is in a right state - the previous owners left it as a giant sandpit basically and every cat and its friends used it as a giant litter tray. We put down grass seed but it has been thinned by the cats again - we also added the little wall at the bottom of the garden with good intentions but never got any further.

You cant really see int he picture but off to the left there is a small patio area which i would like to try doing some container growing on but have no idea where to start apart form pots, compost and seeds. Not really helpful but i guess its the basics really!

someone help - baring in mind i have a two year old and a jack russell dog - i need some ideas
Time to find me again

  • To be honest, I think I'd start again from scratch ... get rid of the paving slabs and old turf, and relay new stuff.

In terms of growing stuff in pots, you have a lot of choice. Tomatoes do well, herbs, salad leaves, spring onions, but none of those this time of year. I'd wait for warmer weather.

You can grow loads of things in pots and with a little one around and a dog this is what I would do. I've grown some beautiful baby carrots in pots and perpetual spinach too. The ground looks a little ropey so for a quick fix I would grab a few very large bags of compost from B & Q and dig that in to make the soil better. If you want a lawn then the easiest way to stop the cats is to mesh it over until the grass has grown. I buy the cheapy green netting from Wilko's and just peg in over the garden about 6 inches from the soil. then throw some hardwearing grass seed all over and water it well.
