Working on Job Seekers

I've potentially been offered three hours a week cleaning for my mum's work. It'd be temp so I could earn some money before they hire a new cleaner. How would this affect job seekers? I'd be earning about £18ish a week

If your single they disregard the first £5 then take £1 for £1 from the JSA.

So you'll get £13ish removed from your weekly JSA.
  • Hardly worth doing then is it. For the extra £5 a week I'd get it's not worth it. I'd be working for £20 but actually only getting £5

Hey there..in terms of the money side it might seem like it's not worth it but the person above was right in saying about experience although you might not want any cleaning jobs in the future... every little job in your CV helps and the fact that you made the effort to have a job between uni etc really works in your favour in terms of your work ethic so go for it and good luck at uni!!!

    A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."
  • I agree with Maz, Do the Job, then you will have earnt the money yourself instead of relying on people like you will one day become yourself (tax payers).

You'll have to take jobs while you're at uni anyway unless you already have your degree and are doing a PGCE & being paid for it. I know students who've had more than one job so they could support themselves.

The past two summers I have worked good jobs (well good paying jobs anyways) and paid my way.

As for a job at uni no I won't be taking one as I am not allowed to take one. it is a one year PGCE with some basic funding, however in the university regulations you are required to sign to say you are dedicating your time to this. Really when would you work in a 9-5 uni week and then have weekends for course work.

It definatly isn't worth it in the money side. and in terms of every little helping to my CV I have done this sort of work in the past and held down various jobs over the past two summers. The fact is that by the time I've paid my travel I will be losing money compared to what I have now.

My work ethic is just fine as I am currently volunteering anyway

As a recipient of JSA you promise to seek work. You have been offered work. You are not taking it - even though you would be better off - not just by the £5 but by building up your NI credits. A 3-hour/week cleaning job would not prevent your seeking other better paying work.

How much volunteering do you do each week?

I haven't been offered work. If you read the first post there was a potential offer of work. I wouldn't be paying NI as I would only be earning £20ish quid a week, and I would also pay no tax because of the low paid status.

I spoke to the lady in the job centre today about it and she said if you have any travel costs then it would not be worth taking as I would be worse off. Now as there would be fuel and parking if I drove or a bus ticket to pay if I got public transport, I would be worse off than I am already.

I volunteer two mornings a week at a local nursury, 8.30am-1.30pm. The job centre are aware of this and fully support it as it is in preperationf or my future career plan.

I stress again the chances of me finding better paid work/better hours are very slim. I return to university in about 8 weeks time.

It is also not for a lack of trying. I have applied for many jobs including hte obvious places. The reponse I had from Macdonalds, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Asda were all the same - Overqualified. This is due to me having a First Class degree.

The other obvious thing to point out is that I would still be on JSA even with this job.
